Secondary Teaching for Mastery

Mathematical Thinking

Developing mathematical thinking across a maths department

Who can take part?

This opportunity is for schools in England that have previously participated in a Secondary Teaching for Mastery Work Group or have a trained Mastery Specialist in their department.

Each school will nominate two teachers to take part. Participants should be well placed to lead change within the department.

What is involved?

Help your students move beyond rote memorization and discover the power of mathematical thinking. Our work group will show you how to design lessons that encourage students to reason, make connections, and communicate their ideas, leading to a deeper, more secure understanding of maths.

Participants work with a small group of local schools, led by an experienced Mastery Specialist or Advocate, to embed teaching for mastery approaches across their department. Work Groups provide opportunities for lesson observation and collaborative planning.

What is the cost?

The work groups are fully funded by the Maths Hubs Programme so are free to participating schools/colleges.
